Cavaliers take two from Pirates
Johnson County swept Independence in a big conference double header last Saturday to regain second place in conference. The Cavaliers took game one 7 – 5 behind a strong pitching performance from Sophomore Dustin Holthaus. The Cavalier offense exploded for six runs in the first inning and added a run in the second, giving Dustin all he would need to pick up his seventh win of the season. Jake Smith came on in relief in the sixth, striking out one with the bases loaded and two outs to end the Pirates threat. Smith picked up his first save on the year striking out the side in the 7th. Parker Amos continued his hot hitting going 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in two runs. Mitchell Mathis, John Lenherr, Jeremy Francis, and Doug Otto each chipped in one hit a piece.
Johnson County took game two 2-0 behind yet another strong pitching performance from freshman Brandon Droge. He pitched all seven innings picking up his sixth win on the season. He held the Pirates to zero runs on five hits.
The Cavalier offense once again started on fire, scoring one run in the first and one run in the second. David Drahozal led off the game with a catcher’s interference call and Mathis drove him in on the next pitch hitting a double in the right center gap. Mathis, Otto, Amos, and Jeremy Francis each had a hit. The defense had zero errors in the game and flashed the leather on several different occasions.
