Baseball team achieves academic success

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Johnson County Community College baseball head coach Kent Shelley announced today his 2007-08 baseball squad achieved a 3.16 team grade point average for the fall semester.    The Cavaliers had an amazing 23 of its 27 student-athletes post a grade point of 3.0 or higher last fall.  Their 3.16 GPA was good enough to rank them second in all sports at JCCC.

“This says something about the character of the kids we bring to our program,” Shelley said.  “This is really special considering we are a top 10 academic institution nationally.  I can’t say enough about what a great job our student-athletes, academic counselors and my two assistant coaches have done this year to make this possible.”

Shelley said he and his assistants, Eric Horner and David Canary, make sure the team stays on track with grade checks and attendance checks every two weeks.  He also said his staff also focuses its recruiting effort on getting kids that will continue to be quality student-athletes when they arrive on campus.

The 23 baseball players with a 3.0 or better will honored in February at the JCCC Athletic Academic Night, along with the other student-athletes who achieved this honor.
