Cavaliers Hitting on All Cylinders in Season Opener
Johnson County Community College braved the cold and wind during their first game of the year. The Cavaliers went on the road to face Ottawa University in a nine inning game on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008.
The temperature was 34 degrees, but the Cavaliers were outstanding in all phases of the game. The Cavaliers scored 23 runs on 20 hits, and every position player on the roster reached base safely. Freshman John Lenherr was 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, sophomore Doug Otto was 4-for-7 with 3 RBI, freshman Nate Thomas was 2-for-3, and sophomore Chad Griffin was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. The offense also had 5 doubles and 1 homerun by sophomore Ashton Phillips.
The pitching staff looked very sharp in their debut. Travis Blankenship got his first win of the season, pitching 4 innings and giving up one earned run. Freshmen Ryan Garman and Brandon Droge each pitched two innings of scoreless relief, and sophomore Jake Smith pitched a scoreless ninth. The pitching staff combined for 9 innings, 12 strikeouts, 2 walks, 6 hits, and 1 earned run on the day.
