Baseball team earns two commitments
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Johnson County Community College head baseball coach Kent Shelley is proud to announce the commitments of Brad Alberts and Zach Smith. Albert is a 6-1 catcher/pitcher from Olathe Northwest High School, and Smith is a 6-5 pitcher/infielder from Ft. Zumwalt South High School in St. Peters, Mo.
Alberts is a two-way player who can to it all according to Shelley. He hits for power and has an arm that can shut down a running game. On the mound, Alberts can really bring the heat. He has topped out at 92 mph, and shows a sharp slider to go with his fastball.
“Brad is another big talent we have coming to JCCC,” said Shelley. “He turned down several Division I schools to become a Cavalier. He is a hard worker who gets it done on the field and in the classroom. We look forward to seeing just how good he can be when he gets on campus.”
Smith’s play this season is a major reason his team is off to a strong start. He is hitting .478 with six doubles. On the mound, he is 2-0 with a 1.00 earned run average.
“Finding a player that can compete at this level is hard enough, but when you can find one that can pitch and hit, you get very excited,” Shelley said. “Zach is one of the most feared hitters and pitchers in the St. Louis area, and we are very happy he decided to continue his playing career with us. He is an outstanding student and a great young man.”
