JCCC baseball team earns conference academic honor
OVERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College recently was awarded the Kansas Jayhawk Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete Champion trophy for 2009. This is JCCC's first academic conference championship in the six-year history of the award.
The first year the trophy was awarded was in 2004. That year, Kansas Representative Tom Sloan developed an award to recognize the importance of academic achievement and the linkage with extra-curricular success. The winner of the trophy each year is the school whose baseball team combines academic excellence and on-the-field performance as measured by multiplying the team's grade point average by two and adding the team's won-loss percentage.
The Cavaliers had team grade point of 3.23 last spring, and posted a winning percentage of .754 with a 43-14 record. Their 3.23 grade point average ranked eighth in the NJCAA, and the team finished the season ranked 14th nationally for their on-field performance.
In addition, 17 players earned conference all-academic honors, the most in the conference. Those 17 were Brad Alberts, Grant DeGarmo, Ryan Garman, Zach Gove, Nick Holtgrieve, Drew House, John Lenherr, Brian McCulloch, Drew Mikkelson, Ben Millard, Dustin Moses, Josh Piper, John Rehwinkel, Ryan Rogers, Zach Smith, Sam Stucky and Nate Thomas.
