Johnson County Community College
Series 400: Personnel
Section 419: Employee Benefits

In case of a death(s) in the "immediate family" of a full-time regular employee, up to five (5) days of bereavement leave without loss of pay may be arranged with the appropriate supervisor.

A full-time regular employee may be granted the privilege of using up to ten (10) days per fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) of his/her sick leave for absence due to illness or medical appointments in his/her "immediate family," for attending funerals for those outside of the immediate family, or for religious observances. If sick leave time taken under this policy exceeds five (5) working days in any fiscal year, appropriate documentation will be required to substantiate the need for any additional sick leave time in excess of the first five (5) days that are requested under this policy in that fiscal year. Such documentation is to be provided by the employee to the Office of Human Resources at the time the request for additional time is submitted. This provision shall be in addition to the benefits provided in Policy 419.12s of these policies, pursuant to the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Should a full-time regular employee require more than ten (10) days in any given fiscal year due to medical circumstances occurring in the employee's immediate family, the employee shall be allowed to charge such additional time to his or her available vacation leave and/or personal leave. If additional leave time is required after the employee's total available vacation and/or personal leave time has been exhausted, the employee may request approval to use additional sick leave time. Such request shall be submitted through the Office of Human Resources. Medical documentation will be required to support the request. If such request is received, it will be submitted to the President, Executive Vice President or Chief Information Officer, as appropriate, for approval. If approval is not granted, the employee may request a leave of absence. Any such time taken beyond the ten (10) days provided in the paragraph immediately above, whether paid or unpaid, shall be pursuant to the Family and Medical Leave Act as provided in Policy 419.12s.

This leave is at the discretion of the president or his/her designee and does not accrue.

"Immediate family," for the purpose of this policy, will be interpreted to mean the spouse, child, father, father-in-law, mother, mother-in-law, grandparent, sister, brother, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, grand-child, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, or other person who occupies such position in the family, or a person living in the same household.
