Johnson County Community College
Series 400: Personnel
Section 419: Employee Benefits

1. Number of Holidays

The college will grant full-time regular employees no less than fourteen (14) paid holidays per year.

2. Holiday Work Schedule

An employee will not normally be expected to work on holidays. A full-time regular employee shall receive holiday time at his/her regular straight time rate to the extent that he/she would have been regularly scheduled to work had the holiday not occurred, provided that the employee works the scheduled shift immediately preceding and immediately following the holidays. Other approved leaves if occurring immediately before or after the holiday shall be considered as time worked for the purpose of interpreting this policy.

a. A classified employee may be required and authorized to work on a holiday by the employee's immediate supervisor.

In those cases when a full-time regular classified employee is required to work on a holiday, such work must be approved and authorized by the employee's immediate supervisor prior to the holiday. The college shall at its discretion either designate an alternate day as a paid holiday or pay the employee at his/her regular rate of pay plus the regular overtime rate for any holiday time worked consistent with the college’s overtime policies instead of granting time off at straight-time pay. If the college designates an alternate day as a paid holiday, such day shall be at the college's choosing and normally will be scheduled within three (3) months from the date of the holiday.

b. A salaried employee may be required and authorized to work on a holiday by the appropriate executive vice president, vice president or chief information officer.

In those cases when a salaried employee is required to work on a holiday, such work must be approved and authorized by the appropriate executive vice president, vice president or chief information officer prior to the holiday. The college shall designate an alternate day of its choosing as a paid holiday, and such day normally will be scheduled within three (3) months from the date of the holiday. A salaried employee shall not be entitled to an alternate holiday if he/she works on a holiday without appropriate prior approval.

3. Floating Holidays

The college may permit an employee to schedule one or more of these holidays as a floating holiday. Floating holidays will be non-cumulative, and separating employees shall not be reimbursed for floating holidays not taken. The employee must schedule any floating holidays with the appropriate supervisor before they are to be taken.

4. Holiday Calendar

The college shall make available to each employee a calendar of fixed and designated holidays for the fiscal year, July 1 through June 30, no later than the preceding May 1.
