Johnson County Community College
Series 300: Student Personnel
Section 314: Academic Policies
It is the policy of JCCC that punctual attendance at all scheduled classes
is regarded as integral to all courses and is expected of all students.
Each JCCC faculty member will include attendance guidelines in his or her
course syllabus: students will be responsible for knowing and adhering to
these guidelines. Penalties for excessive absences may include reduction
of grade. It is the student's responsibility to obtain class materials
missed due to absence.
Students who, by the end of the second week of the semester, (prorated for
classes less than 16 weeks in length) have not attended at least one
session of each course in which they are enrolled, are subject to being
dropped from those courses not attended with no forgiveness of tuition and
fees.
Students enrolled in distance learning courses are subject to being dropped
if they do not fulfill the initial requirements established in the course
syllabus. Distance learning courses are offered in a variety of ways and
include on-line courses, television courses, self-paced, or video-tape
based, and some use a combination of approaches.
Students under obligation to participate in jury duty, required military
duty, a generally recognized religious observance, and/or activities where
they are required to represent the college must give written notice to the
faculty member at least one week in advance of the observance. Questions
on whether a religious holiday is recognized and/or an activity is
college-sponsored should be directed to the vice president of Student
Services and/or the Student Affairs Committee. Students shall be accorded
the opportunity to independently make up course work or work of equal
value, for the day(s) the event was scheduled and to take a scheduled exam
at an alternate time determined by the instructor. Failure to provide
timely written notice may result in loss of this opportunity. Students
should be aware that the quality of the learning experience may suffer as
a result of the absence if the course work is not made up.
For all other absences, authorization of excuse is the province of the
individual faculty member and subject to the standard appeal process.
Students receiving benefits from a governmental agency must follow any
policy the specific agency stipulates. Lack of attendance may impact
financial aid.
