Physical Examination
Each fall, JCCC arranges for a licensed physician to give student-athletes
a low-cost physical examination. An athlete must have on file an exam
performed by a licensed physician before beginning practice with the team.
In addition, a questionnaire must be completed regarding personal medical
history. This should include the name(s) of the student’s family doctor,
any previous medical problems, medication the student may be taking and
family insurance coverage. All forms must be completed.
Insurance Coverage
JCCC provides secondary injury insurance to cover injuries to JCCC
student-athletes. The athlete’s (or their parent’s) personal health
insurance is intended to cover the initial portion of any medical bills
that occur as a result of an injury to an athlete who is practicing or
competing for JCCC during the school year. JCCC’s secondary athletic
injury insurance then covers any remaining bills, once the athlete’s own
insurance has paid its portion.
In such case as the athlete is uninsured by personal insurance, then the
JCCC policy becomes the primary insurance provider for the injury incurred
by the athlete, while practicing or playing for JCCC.
In an attempt to control medical expenses and insurance premiums, both of
which have increased steeply over the past two years, JCCC has established
the following policy, similar to those in force at many college athletics
departments:
JCCC Injury Care Policy: Team Physicians and Non-Disclosure of
Pre-existing Injuries
1. 1. JCCC Student Athletes who are injured while practicing,
conditioning or playing for JCCC, will be required to see JCCC Team
Physicians and athletic trainers for their injury evaluation, treatment
and (possible) surgeries.
- If the athlete prefers to see his or her own choice of physician, (not one of the designated JCCC Team Physicians), the entire cost of the evaluation and subsequent treatments will become the sole responsibility of the athlete and/or his or her parents. NO JCCC ATHLETIC INJURY INSURANCE WILL BE FILED to assist in covering the costs.
2. 2. JCCC student athletes will be required to gain clearance to
practice, condition or play following an injury, ONLY via JCCC Team
Physicians, and not through their own physicians, regardless of any
release from the latter.
3. , and coaches, about
any previous injuries or “nagging” problems that they arrive with at JCCC.
It will be the athlete’s responsibility to accomplish all remedial or
preventive treatments or exercise prescribed by JCCC Team Physicians, or
Athletic Trainers. NO insurance coverage will be provided for athletes who
fail to disclose a pre-JCCC injury, at the time of his/her preparticipation
physical exam.
The team physicians utilized by JCCC athletics have been selected because
of their unique expertise in sports medicine, and for their commitment to
work closely with the JCCC Athletic Training staff to provide prompt, high
level, and consistent, athletic injury care at a reasonable cost.
Note: In such case as an injury occurs while on the road, the local
emergency medical facilities will be considered as part of the JCCC
approved sports-medical network.
