Financial Aid and Scholarships

To defray other educational costs, the student athlete is encouraged to apply for additional funding through the Student Financial Aid office. Applying for federal aid takes time, and students should apply early, preferably before the April 1 priority deadline. Begin by completing the federal financial aid application, FAFSA, which may be obtained through Student Financial Aid in 253 SC or from high school counselors or go online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Once the Student Financial Aid office has received your information, they may request additional forms later. JCCC’s school code is 008244.

Students should submit accurate information and maintain communication with their financial aid adviser to ensure the financial aid is available before classes begin. Make sure that your correct address has been submitted to the Admissions office because all offices will use that address for correspondence.

Grants are awards that do not have to be paid back. The most prominent of the grant money is the Federal Pell Grant. If eligible, the student athlete may receive up to $4,050 per academic year at JCCC.

College Work-study Program provides part-time jobs to assist students in meeting educational expenses. Because this is earned money, no money is paid back. Studies show that students working up to 15 hours a week display a higher academic success rate than those who do not work.

Upon receiving all requested documents, the Student Financial Aid office will assemble the student athlete's financial aid package and send a notification of financial assistance to the student-athlete. The notification assumes the student-athlete wishes to accept his or her athletic awards but does not assume acceptance of federal financial aid. Return the notification to the Student Financial Aid office to let them know if you wish to accept or reject all or part of the aid. Please remember this money is to be used for educational purposes. Any amount due the school (tuition, fees or books) will be subtracted from any awarded monies first.

Student loans must be paid back. Typically, the student begins repayment once he or she either drop below half-time enrollment, as outlined in the student handbook, or is no longer enrolled. There is a six-month grace period before repayment begins. This is a great opportunity for student-athletes to establish their own credit rating. Please note that if these loans are not paid back, serious consequences will result, including a poor credit rating, denial of future financial aid, garnishment of wages, lawsuits and more.

Please keep in mind that if the student-athlete withdraws from all of his or her classes some of the aid funds may have to be paid back to the federal agencies or JCCC, even in the case of grant money. And if student-athletes withdraw from some of their classes prior to the 20th day of classes, part of the Federal Pell Grant could be withdrawn and the student would owe that money back to JCCC and the federal government immediately.

The FAFSA is the tool the federal government uses to determine a student's eligibility; JCCC assists students in accessing that aid.

Scholarships

Athletic scholarships are awarded within NJCAA and Jayhawk Conference guidelines. Kansas resident athletes may receive scholarships that pay for tuition up to 64 attempted credit hours (developmental classes are not included, up to 12 credit hours) and required textbooks only (e.g., no supplies, lab supplies, etc.). Out-of-state athletes may receive scholarships available through the JCCC Foundation; amounts may vary according to the availability of funds. The student athlete must pay activity and course fees. There are no exceptions.

Nell Mitchell Criteria

  • Student must be seeking a degree at JCCC or planning to transfer to earn a degree in a physical education-related field.
  • Student must be enrolled in four or more credit hours of health, physical education and recreation (a 1-credit-hour activity class and at least one 3-credit-hour lecture course).
  • Student must provide a written letter of intent to enter the field of physical education (or related disciplines as defined in the curriculum). This letter of intent must be on file with the director of athletics.
  • Student must have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.0 (high school or college).

An application is available through the Financial Aid office.

Academic Scholarships
Along with rewarding athletic talent, JCCC also rewards academic excellence for the Kansas resident student athlete. Incoming high school and transfer students with a 3.5 cumulative G.P.A. (all hours including pre-college) are eligible for a $500 award each semester. Official transcripts must be on file in the Records office to verify G.P.A. before the award will be made.

Summer School Procedures

Scholarship athletes are allowed to attempt 64 credit hours for their scholarship, with the exception of 12 credit hours of developmental classes, which will not be counted as part of the 64 attempted hours.

Summer school may be taken as part of the 64 credit hours. You must notify the college by May 1 that you are going to take summer school. You must be in good academic standing. The only difference between summer school and the fall/spring semesters is that you must pay for the classes before the summer school payment deadline. You may get reimbursed for the classes attempted in the summer, provided you receive a minimum grade of “C”.

Please keep receipts for the books purchased. Once your grade is posted, you can then request a check for your reimbursement.

Reimbursements must be taken care of before the first of August. No reimbursements will be handled after August 1.
