JCCC Terminology
If you have never attended JCCC, you may find the following descriptions helpful in navigating through the admissions and enrollment process. Advising Express - a model of counseling designed to serve a high volume of students during peak registration times when the Counseling Center is experiencing a heavy flow of student traffic. Signs are posted in the Success Center directing students to the location where they will work with counselors to plan their course schedule. Application for Admission - The application for admission is the first step and the first document you fill out to enroll in credit courses with your name, address, high school or colleges attended, etc. It begins your college file. You can’t enroll in classes until the application is processed. Associate Degrees - refer to the link for JCCC’s Associate degrees. However, the Associate of Arts degree is a general education two-year, typically sought for the purpose of tailoring or adapting in order to transfer to a four-year school. To help you tailor your course selection toward the requirements of a particular school, written transfer guides are available in the Success Center or online. Counselors are happy to assist you with this planning process. Career Program - This program is intended for the student who is seeking immediate entry into the job market upon completion. This program may typically be completed in two years (associate’s degree) or less (certificate program). Catalog of Courses - An online guide that lists degree/certificate programs, degree requirements and course descriptions. The catalog does not include a list of course dates and times, but instead it is an overview that guides you in degree course selection. It is a good idea to be familiar with the catalog before meeting with a counselor to discuss your educational and career goals. Certificate - A program plan of courses specific to a career or industry which is designed to provide necessary skill sets (examples: auto technology, electricity, HVAC, computer information technology). Class Schedule - A booklet printed each semester listing the times, dates and locations of classes offered in a semester. The schedule is also located at . The online version features a function to check availability and course outlines. Credit Hour - A unit of time that indicates how many hours a week a particular course meets, and may help you gauge how much work the course entails. Credit tuition is charged on a per-credit-hour basis. A three-credit-hour class (like English Composition) might meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for an hour each day. Co-requisite - A course that you need to take either simultaneously with another course, or before the other course. Course Load - Number of credit hours that you are enrolled in each semester. Twelve credits equal full-time status; six credits equal half-time status. CRN - An abbreviation of course reference number. The CRN is a five-digit number, found in the credit class schedule, on the far left side, which is tied to a section of a particular course. You will need to know the CRN for each class in order to enroll. Distance (Online) Learning - Classes offered over the Internet, via computer or on television, whereby students do not need to come to campus to meet regularly with a teacher in a classroom to complete coursework or earn college credit. Enroll - The process of choosing and registering for the course. Enrolling (sometimes called registering) can be done online through your MyJCCC account, or in person at the Add/Drop Desk second floor, or by telephone at 913-469-2330, depending on your student status. Full-time Student - Student with a course load of 12 or more credit hours per semester (fall or spring) or 6 credits in the summer. Hold - A function in the database that can prevent you from registering. Holds can be placed on your account for several reasons, including, but not limited to unpaid balances, required academic advising and/or financial aid counseling. JCCC ID Number - An eight-digit student identification number permanently assigned to you for all of your JCCC records. Not sure what yours is? Click on MyJCCC and then click on the line “What’s my user name or ID?” on the JCCC Web page. Or ask an enrollment assistant at the Add /Drop Desk in the Success Center. JCCC Photo ID - You are provided a free JCCC Picture ID card by going to the first floor of the Student Center, Library, or Gymnasium and having your picture taken. Your JCCC ID number will be placed on the card. Pin number A six-digit personal identification number that you created on your application for admission. You will need this number to register in person or on the phone. MyJCCC (formerly 'Pipeline') - JCCC’s online enrollment and information system including student e-mail. Password - A new requirement since the fall 2006, you will create an encrypted password in your MyJCCC account for added security on the web site. Remember your password, because no JCCC staff can access it for you. If you forget or want to create a new password, the MyJCCC site will take you through the steps. PIN Number - A six-digit personal identification number that you created on your application for admission.You will need this number to register using your MyJCCC account. Pre-requisite - A course that you need to complete prior to registering for a certain class. Section Number - If a class is offered more than once a semester, each class is assigned a different section number which identifies the time, place and instructor. If there is only one class, it is called Section 001. Semester - The academic year is divided into two sections called semesters: fall and spring. The duration of most courses will not exceed one semester.Fall and spring semesters are 16 weeks.The summer session is eight weeks.There are summer mini sessions lasting only four weeks. Student athlete - A JCCC student who has been accepted on an athletic team, including student trainers and drill squad members. Student athletes have different requirements for enrollment and eligibility. If you are a JCCC athlete, you will be assigned a team counselor who assists you for enrollment, drop/adds, etc. Transfer Guide - Printed and Web resources to help you choose courses that will transfer to a particular four-year college or university. Type "transfer" into the Search box on the JCCC Web page. The printed transfer guides are available on the second floor of the Success Center for local colleges. Transfer Student - A student who transfers from one institution of higher learning to another. For example, a JCCC student who transfers to a four-year college or university. Transfer Programs - A program of study for students who plan to continue their education at a four-year college or university. User Name - An assigned “name” that you are required to know in order to log onto MyJCCC registration account. Not sure what yours is? It is usually a combination of your first and last name and also serves as the first part of you JCCC e-mail address. |
