Is an AAS, AS, AGS, AA or a Certificate Right for Me?
Divider

JCCC offers many types of degrees and certificates to mark the completion of a chosen program of study. Below is the list of options that may be offered. Check the on-line catalog to see which options are offered in your program of interest.

Liberal Arts Degrees:

AA – Associates of Arts Degree. This degree is generally used by students who want to begin their study here at JCCC then continue towards a Bachelor's degree at a four-year institution. The AA program plan outlines the required courses and the elective courses. It is important to note that for most four-year programs, the “electives” in the AA will be courses that the 4-year degree program will require. (AA degrees are also offered in Fire Services Administration, Administration of Justice, and Paralegal. These majors are career programs where many of the graduates seek additional degrees. These AA degree "Electives" are prescribed within these career programs?.)

AGS - Associates of General Studies. This new degree offers the flexibility of a liberal arts degree without all of the requirements of the AA degree. It does not include many of the courses required for transfer to a four-year institution.

Career Programs:

AS – Associate of Science. This degree is only offered for students who complete the program in Early Childhood Education or Biotechnology. JCCC does NOT offer a general AS degree.

AAS – Associates of Applied Science. This degree is only offered for students who complete a career program as listed in the catalog. JCCC does NOT offer a general AAS degree.

Certificates:

Certificates of varying credit hours are offered in many of our career programs. Students, who want to focus on adding new skill areas without the time needed to complete a degree, may find completing a certificate a good plan. For many certificates the credit hours used to achieve it will apply toward an AAS.

With all of these choices, it is advised for a student to speak with a counselor if he/she has questions about the options and/ or transfer implications.
