Welcome to the Web page for the Department of Anthropology. Our department currently offers nine courses including introductory and specialized courses preparatory to the major. These courses are also designed to broaden the field of knowledge for students who major in other disciplines and provide an opportunity for inquiry for anyone interested in cultural studies.
A strength of the department is our emphasis on applied anthropology. Many of our faculty members are actively engaged in community-based participatory research and community-based archaeology. As a result of faculty research, course content reflects the latest developments in the rapidly changing field of anthropology. Many courses offer students the opportunity for service-learning and to participate in faculty-supervised research.
The mission of the Department of Anthropology at Johnson County Community College is:
- to utilize anthropology’s five sub-fields – archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and medical anthropology – to introduce students to the core concepts of the field of anthropology;
- to promote the acceptance of, respect for, and an understanding of diverse peoples, communities, and cultures through our courses and various community engagement endeavors;
- to work with, foster positive relationships with, and address the needs of diverse peoples, communities, and cultures through the application of applied anthropological theories, perspectives, and methodologies;
- to partner with other academic institutions and governmental and non-governmental agencies to address the needs of diverse peoples, communities, and cultures.
