These are projects planned by an individual or a work group at the college that are intended to benefit nonprofit organizations. Students, staff and faculty are welcome to volunteer for, participate in or contribute to any of these projects. Projects may include programs, events, runs/walks, drives or collections, or holiday adopt-a-family efforts. Events and activities can be added to this list by contacting Marcia Shideler, shideler@jccc.edu, ext. 3570, JCCC box #5. Listings should include:

  • The name of the non-profit community organization sponsoring the event
  • The date, time and location of the event
  • A brief description of the organization or activity
  • The name of a JCCC employee to be contacted for further information or scheduling

August OPL School Supply Drive
Collected 102 backpacks and supplies such as paper, markers, pencils, rulers, pens, notebooks, glue sticks and scissors, as well as $533 in cash and gift certificates for the Olathe School District.

United Way Annual Campaign
The United Way of Greater Kansas City is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization that works to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all in our community. Their ultimate goal is to create long-lasting changes by addressing underlying causes of prolems.

JCCC raised $77,335 this year, exceeding the goal of $70,000.

Oct. 1-16 SAFEHOME - Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Cell phone collection

SAFEHOME has provided support for survivors of domestic violence in the Kansas City area for 29 years. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and one of the ways OPL can be a part of the solution in our community is to collect used cell phones for use by the residents of SAFEHOME.

Women's Employment Network
9 a.m.-12 p.m.
The Women's Employment network provides employment preparation and career transition support to women in the Kansas City metro area. In addition to resume development, interview preparation and job search assistance, WEN maintains a professional clothing bank for use by their graduates. Donations of professional business clothing will be collected. Items not accepted by WEN will be donated to a local charity.

Collected three very full racks of women's clothing suitable for work attire.

Christmas in October
The Kansas City Christmas in October project provides needed home repair assistance to homeowners who lack the skills or resources necessary to undertake the repairs themselves The homeowners are primarily the elderly and disabled.

Fifty-two JCCC volunteers visited six homes in Kansas City, Kansas. Faculty and staff can read more here.

Kansas Special Olympics - Metro volleyball tournament, JCCC GYM
Special Olympics is an international year-round program of sports training, education and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

JCCC provided 11 volunteers.

Dec. 3 Caroling for Cash
Dashing through the snow... Join other OPL members as we celebrate the holiday season by singing some of our favorite holiday songs through campus and collect cash for a local charity. The only requirement is the desire to make a joyful noise!

Cross-Lines Community Outreach Food Kitchen
OPL members are invited to volunteer at the Cross-Lines Community Outreach food kitchen from 7 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. to serve breakfast. Participants will assist in preparing and serving food along with cleaning up the facility. This activity is limited to 10 volunteers.

Harvesters - BackSnack Program
The Harvesters BackSnack program provides backpacks of food to low income children for the weekend to combat weekend hunger. We're looking for volunteers to assist in packing the backpacks for weekly distribution to more than 8,000 children in the Harvesters service area.

SAFEHOME - "Wish List" Items
The mission of SAFEHOME is "to break the cycle of sexual and domestic violence and abuse." In 2007 alone, SAFEHOE provided services to more than 5,800 domestic violence victims and their children. OPL will collect items from SAFEHOME's wish list needed to assist their residents and to maintain their facilities.
