Introduction to Civic Honors
Why Have a Civic Honors Program?
At Johnson County Community College, “community” is not merely a part of its name—it is a part of the college’s purpose and “personality.” Furthermore, it reflects long-term commitment to the community—as a partner and as a resource—which promotes the kind of collaboration that distinguishes strong communities. Civic responsibility is an important part of being a good employee, a good neighbor, a good citizen, and a good student. A JCCC student graduating with civic honors is one who has made civic education and community experience a deliberate part of his or her college education and one whose civic efforts and achievements have been exemplary.
In 2004, JCCC introduced its Civic Honors Program, which provides a framework of courses, training, reflection, and experience which is designed to increase a student's capacity for, self-confidence in, and commitment to effective community engagement and participation.
Who Can Participate?
- Students who plan to graduate from JCCC and have at least two semesters remaining at the college, are welcome to register.
- To be awarded civic honors, students must comply with JCCC’s graduation requirements. There is no minimum GPA to be maintained other than JCCC’s 2.0 graduation requirement.
