Philosophy
Philosophy affects everyone. It embodies the beliefs and values which form
our view of who we are and what the world is like. Every individual has a
working philosophy, although it may not be evident, announced, consistent
or even well understood. The study of philosophy makes these basic beliefs
and values evident, and alerts us to alternative points of view. Studying
philosophy in any of its forms develops evaluative and interpretive
thinking skills, enriches the imagination, and awakens a sense of wonder.
Traditionally, philosophy has been grouped into studies of reality,
knowledge, values and logic, but discussions in our courses are likely to
explore these areas by examining the implications of the theory of
relativity, quantum physics, artificial intelligence, chemical
manipulation of personality, the function of literature and stories, or
the use of visual forms of presentation. As you can see, philosophy is not
only historical, it responds to contemporary ideas and conditions, and it
applies to our lives as we are living them. In this respect, it is the
most practical of subjects you can study.
Additionally, philosophy offers practical vocational benefits. Those who
study philosophy develop habits of mind which serve them well in a variety
of fields. Philosophy provides excellent preparation for careers in law,
journalism, writing, advertising, governmental administration, politics
and teaching. The evaluative and interpretive skills it helps to develop
are abilities that will serve you all of your life.
The Department offers philosophy courses in logic, critical thinking,
ethics, ancient and modern philosophy, and philosophy of religion.
