Brain Research and Instruction -- 2 hours

--will build on information from current brain research. This interactive module will enable participants to develop lessons for their classes based on how the brain learns best. Teaching strategies will be modeled and supported by cognitive research. Group discussion and hands-on participation are key elements in this learning experience.

Essential Podcasting -- 2 hours

--Ever wonder what a podcast is and how you might create or use one? curious about how it might be used for instructional purposes? Essential Podcasting is a self-paced on-line workshop that covers the essential steps to creating and using podcasts. You'll create your first audio podcast, learn about free or inexpensive tools you can use to create and edit your podcast, find out about hardware and software requirements, discover the difference between the basic types of podcasts and learn about important copyright issues. The course also includes an optional two-hour hands-on session where you'll gain experience using Audacity (a free audio editing tool), explore recording equipment (mikes and iPods) for creating your podcasts and a demo of uploading instructional podcasts to JCCC's iTunes U site.

Goal Setting Using the IDS -- 2 hours

--provides a great opportunity to look at ways to set your personal and professional goals. Explore the individual Development Plan (IDP) process and what JCCC offers you for your own development.

iTeach Online -- 2 hours

This seven-week on-line workshop explores how you can place instructional materials, quizzes and discussions on-line using JCCC's on-line learning management system. This session is beneficial for current and future on-line instructors as well as faculty members who wish to place instructional materials on-line for face-to-face classes. The course includes seven sessions and each is offered both on-line as well as face-to-face in a computer classroom. You may enroll for one, several or all of the sessions. You may attend any combination of face-to-face and/or on-line sessions. Requirements for teaching on-line are set by the instructional divisions, so check with your Assistant Dean and Dean to determine what training is required. Service Learning -- 2 hours

--will provide participants with general information about service learning including: definition, rationale, essential components and outcomes. They will learn specifics about the JCCC program: resources, procedures, and community partners. Faculty will also have teh opportunity to practice. Beginning with a description and rationale of out-of-the-classroom teaching and learning strategies, the session will provide an overview of JCCC's internship opportunities and procedures and then focus on service-learning basics. Specific information about JCCC's academic service-learning program (resources, procedures and community partners) will enable participating faculty to practice revising one of their own courses to include a service-learning component.

Learning Styles -- 2 hours

--designed to help students identify their learning profiles and tailor their study techniques to maximize time and energy. Just as each of us has a unique personality, each student has different preferences and strengths to bring to the learning/teaching environment. Multiple learning style inventories will be explored and analyzed. Participants will be given various student profile inventories to take back to their classes, including the VARK, multiple intelligences and personal style inventory, as well as suggested study techniques to help each student maximize their learning.

Master Teacher Workshop

This popular retreat is for both new and returning faculty. Space is limited (this module involves an overnight stay). Watch your mailbox for a registration flier.

Portfolio Prep -- 2 hours

--will review how to build teaching portfolios, which are used to apply for teaching awards at JCCC.

SoftChalk Jumpstart -- 2 hours

SoftChalk is a Microsoft Word-like application that enables the creation of Web pages for use in any Learning Management System (LMS) with a minimum of technical skills. Creating interactive Web pages can be easily accomplished using basic text editing skills, without any programming. With SoftChalk, course content is converted into professionally designed pages that automatically generate a table of contents. Engaging learning materials are created with a minimum of effort. Some of the easy-to-add features include on-line practice quizzes, text pop-up annotations, matching exercises, flash cards, crossword puzzles, information sidebars and drag and drop activities. All the files created with SoftChalk can then be packaged and easily uploaded into any LMS and unpackaged to create learning modules.

Teaching Beyond Technique -- 2 hours

--will strive to help participants rejuvenate their teaching by going beyond technique. Participants will reflect on who their mentors were and are, personal strengths and challenges, their relationships with students and colleagues, and how their inner lives are represented in their teaching.

Video Editing

--a self-paced course including basic terminology and tasks associated with editing video. After completing an introductory lesson that is independent of any specific software package, you will proceed to learn how to use either Premiere Elements (Windows) or iMovie '08 (Mac).
