Faculty and administrators developed the Center for Instructional
Innovation at JCCC in 1990. In 1991, the name was changed to the Center
for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The CTL is a faculty-based program
counseled by a campus wide advisory committee. In the past a faculty
member was approved by the CTL advisory committee and served as director
for a two-year period. One of the guiding principles of the Center is “By
faculty; For faculty.” JCCC faculty members take ownership in the Center
by establishing initiatives and by leading their colleagues through these
initiatives.
CTL seeks to enhance teaching and learning, improve student and faculty
success and stimulate educational effectiveness. The Center provides
individual consultation in numerous educational specialties, hosts a
variety of faculty workshops and seminars and offers a wide range of
instructional resources.
CTL has physical space on campus, but can be considered being on wheels;
programs and resources can be delivered where faculty members need them.
CTL houses a library with teaching and learning resources for all faculty
to use, a space for faculty to meet with colleagues or connect with a
group to talk about teaching and learning.
In the fall of 2004, a full time Coordinator of Faculty Development was
hired. The Coordinator also coordinates activities for the CTL. CTL
began a new pilot program that gives faculty an increased voice and
ownership. Each department/program area named a faculty liaison that will
work directly with CTL in planning and promoting faculty development
activities that will address their needs and interests. This committee
was named The Faculty Development Advisory Board.
