JCCC Strategic Plan
Diversity Goals
The Office of Diversity Inclusion has as its goal the creation of an
educational and professional experience that is diverse, integrated, and
excellent in all dimensions.
Diversity Objectives
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Johnson County Community
College believes that all students benefit when their community reflects a
broad range of intellectual, cultural, and demographic perspectives and,
therefore, is committed to an educational vision that ensures that
students’ experiences at JCCC will reach the high standards established in
our curriculum and academics.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will reflect the good work
currently in place at this institution by providing visibility and access
to the wide range of diversity programming already part of the everyday
educational experience at JCCC via our Multicultural Center, the Diversity
Inclusion website, collaborations with campus publications, and contacts
with local community members and organizations.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will advance this new vision
to establish a climate and reputation that promotes the identification of
JCCC as an institution focused on creating cultural equity and one fully
engaged in establishing parity for all people on our campus through our
policies, programs, and curriculum. We will strive to increase the
representation of diverse people in the JCCC community so all students,
faculty, and staff feel respected and acknowledged on our campus and in
our classrooms.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at JCCC will implement a
campus-wide strategy to attract and retain new students, faculty and staff
who can strengthen and expand the diverse climate at JCCC and to assure
that all groups are represented. We will accomplish this by building a
basic policy and systems infrastructure that will advance a diverse
educational vision that ensures a fully integrated student experience at
JCCC. The fulfillment of this vision will equip our students with
sustainable models and competencies in self-awareness, teamwork and
organizational skills, social responsibility and diversity awareness.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will play a central role in
shaping and extending this vision of diversity by developing collaborative
relationships with faculty, staff, and students outside their classrooms
and work areas that will foster interactions through which the JCCC
community can inspire advocacy and ally relationships. Our students will
benefit from a deep understanding of the educational value of a diverse
community, the political and social enhancement that an insight into
diversity and multiculturalism and global perspectives gives, and the
ability to cross lines of difference in order to develop full lives and
successful futures.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will integrate with campus
organizations and offices to provide a strong, visible presence with
various campus entities to help create a climate leading to the revision
and monitoring of current policies and the development of training
programs and institutional practices to guarantee that everyone who spends
time at JCCC is treated with dignity and respect.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion understands that interaction
with the President’s Office, Human Resources, Student Services, and Campus
Services, in particular, is essential to reaching our goals. We will
assist, in any means necessary, these departments as they train members of
search and hiring committees in proactive methods of finding diverse,
qualified candidates for open positions.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will collaborate on the
development of educational programs designed to raise awareness about
inclusion and difference and create opportunities for members of diverse
groups to interact and learn from each other. We will strive for
excellence as part of an institution where the increasingly global and
multicultural nature of our world is reflected in our educational
practices and environment. We will also serve as a cultural and
institutional mentoring center and a resource for faculty, staff or
students. The mentoring center will be enhanced with the establishment of
our Multicultural Center.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will strive to correct the
under-representation of diverse people at JCCC in order to enable our
students to feel that they are respected and acknowledged on our campus
and in our classrooms. Collaborations with the President, the governing
board, the college executive team, Human Resources, Student Services, and
Campus Services are essential to reaching this goal. The Human Resources
department presently defines and trains each member of screening and
hiring committees in proactive methods of finding qualified candidates for
all open academic and professional positions.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will work with Human
Resources to establish a positive grievance procedure that will allow any
current or prospective employees to openly voice their issues without fear
of retaliation or bullying and with the assurance that their complaints
will be taken seriously and fully investigated. We will also work
diligently, especially through education, to help prevent any new
instances from occurring.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will collaborate with campus
student organizations that respond to the needs of diverse student and
community groups to develop a means of sharing needs, interests, common
concerns, ideologies, and visions for the positive growth and recognition
of our campus. In a spirit of community building, we will address issues
of concern brought forward by any member of the JCCC community.
The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will make a concerted effort
to engage our community in our efforts to attract, promote, and retain a
diverse population on campus. We understand that community support and
outreach are critical to the growth of JCCC and recognize that we need the
participation and input of community members from Johnson County and the
larger Kansas City metropolitan area to fully realize our Diversity
mission. Therefore, outreach to community groups and partnerships with
businesses will be a priority. Hopefully, this sharing of diversity
efforts will bring the community and institution closer together.
