JCCC Statement of Cultural Diversity
AA and AS degree-seeking students will complete a course with an approved diversity designation. Designated courses comprehensively study domestic and/or global diversity where students learn how culture, race, geography, socio-economic status, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical and cognitive abilities, religion, political beliefs, ethnicity, or other forms of cultural identity create similarities and differences in the human experience. Courses receiving this designation thoroughly address at least one aspect of cultural diversity and demonstrate that students begin to analyze, evaluate or apply knowledge to understand their own identities, their perceptions and behaviors towards others, and/or to rethink their worldviews. A desired educational outcome is for students to develop life-long competencies to live and work in a culturally diverse and global society.
The course outline for classes submitted as Diversity courses will meet the following criteria:
- Course exposes students to alternative perspectives, histories, experiences, and worldviews.
- Course encourages students to evaluate their own perspectives, histories, experiences, and worldviews in the context of human diversity.
- Course provides students with general tools to understand similarities and differences in the human experience and prepares students to apply these tools.
- Course encourages students to experience a perspective that is different from their own.
