Correspondence/Distance Learning Testing for External Educational Institutions

JCCC testing lab provides a proctored environment for the administration of correspondence/distance learning exams as a service to the community. However, because the exams are administered in an open lab and utilize limited resources, some restrictions exist related to the type of exam accepted and the timing of the administration.

Johnson County Community College belongs to KC REACHE, an alliance of Kansas City area colleges and universities. KC REACHE colleges and universities have opened their testing centers to all KC REACHE students. If your online instructor requires you to go to campus to take exams, you can utilize a testing center nearest you by taking your exam at another member campus. Visit www.kcreache.org to find out how you can take advantage of these privileges!

To use the service, examinees and originating institutions must follow the policy guidelines detailed below:

Guidelines for originating institutions:

  • Members of the testing lab staff serve as correspondence/distance learning exam proctors.
  • Exams requiring a special administration, such as audiotapes or printing a hard copy of answers require individual permission and scheduling from Testing Services administration.
  • Instructions to the examinee must be provided in writing (e.g., proctors will not give verbal instructions.)
  • Instructions to the proctor must be provided in writing by the originating institution and must accompany the exam (i.e., procedures conveyed to the lab staff verbally or in writing by the examinee will not be accepted).
  • Exams must be administered in one session either timed or untimed (i.e., proctor will record beginning and ending time but will not time subsections of the exam).
  • On-line test must have prior approval of Testing Services administration.
  • Proctors will not collect additional materials from examinee or give additional materials to examinees from the originating institution (e.g., take-home tests, homework, course projects, registration forms, etc.).
  • All necessary test materials must be supplied by the originating institution and must accompany the exam (e.g., examinee information sheets, return envelopes, etc.).
  • E-mailed or faxed tests will not be accepted.
  • The testing lab staff will return exams via first class U.S. mail at JCCC's expense. Special mailing is not available.
  • Completed tests will not be faxed back to originating institution or be copied and kept on file.
  • Originating institutions should consider the schedule governing the availability of testing times for correspondence/distance learning exams (see below) when determining the expiration date of the exam. The exam will not be administered after the specified deadline.

Guideline for examinees:

  • Examinees must present photo identification at the time of testing.
  • All examinees (with the exception of KC REACHE students) must pay a proctor fee. The fee is $25 for tests with an allocated time limit of three hours or less; $50 (per test) for tests with an allocated time limit of greater than three hours. Acceptable payment includes credit card or check payable to JCCC.
  • Examinees must begin and end the test within the regularly scheduled hours of the testing lab and within the dates allotted for the correspondence/distance learning testing.

Correspondence/Distance Learning Examination schedule:

  • The testing lab is closed on college holidays and is open on a limited schedule when classes are not session.
  • Correspondence/distance learning exams for external institutions are not administered during May and December.
