Entry Level Tests (COMPASS)
Any student seeking a degree at JCCC or planning to take a math or English course at JCCC is required to complete the assessment test. Ways in which a student may be exempt from some portions of this test include:
1. If the student has taken the ACT or SAT within the last two years and earned an ACT English sub score of 19 or higher, the student is eligible to be placed into Composition I. Effective Fall 2009, students having ACT Reading sub scores of 19 or higher are eligible to place out of Reading courses. An ACT Mathematics sub score of 26 or higher or SAT Mathematics score of 590 or higher places the student into College Algebra. An ACT Mathematics sub score of 28 or higher or SAT Mathematics sub score of 630 or higher places the student into Business & Applied Calculus II, Calculus for Biology and Medicine or Calculus I Or,
2. If the student has completed a college-level composition and/or algebra course at another institution with a grade of "C" or better, and
3. Those transcripts are on file in the Records office.

No prior registration is required and there is no fee. One retest per term
is allowed.
Two types of assessment tests are available:
COMPASS:
Compass testing is available on a walk-in basis (no appointment necessary) in Testing Services, during regular Testing Services hours. The test is not timed, but examinees should allow approximately one hour for the Mathematics section and two hours for the complete battery. Calculators are permitted on the Mathematics assessment. You may bring your own calculator, provided it is not above TI86. Everyone who takes the COMPASS test starts in the Algebra section of the test. Score reports are available immediately after testing. one retest per term is allowed. COMPASS Placement Scores are valid for 2 years from test date.

ASSET:
This assessment test is a pencil and paper test for placement in Mathematics and English courses, and is used only in special testing circumstances. The test takes approximately 2-2.5 hours and it is timed. Arrangements must be made ahead of time. Calculators are permitted on all sections of the Mathematics assessment with the exception of the Numerical Skills section. You may bring your own calculator, provided it is not above a TI 86. Score reports are not available immediately. ASSET scores are valid for two years from test date.
