Where can I go for help with my writing assignments?

  • The Writing Center provides help with writing assignments. The Center is located in LIB 308. A student ID is required to use the services of the Writing Center.

How can I improve my writing skills?

  • Tutors in the Writing Center will help with writing assignments. Computer software and handouts teach the rules of writing.

Where can I get help on a question about grammar or mechanics?

  • At the Writing Center, or for quick answers, try the Grammar Hotline (913) 469-4413.

Where can I have my writing skills assessed?

  • Instructors in the Writing Center will assess your writing and may give you a computerized test to discover where you may need help. Individualized modules are available. The courses are one-credit, self-paced instructional units which help you learn the rules of standard edited English. Grammar, mechanics, usage, and the rhetorical conventions are covered in a variety of courses.

I am an international student and would like individualized course work to work on improving my English.

  • Recommendation: Enroll in ENGL 103 Practical Writing Skills. This course is designed specifically for students whose English is not their native language. Emphasis is on sentence and paragraph structures, word choice, idioms and phrases.

I would like a review of grammar terms and rules.

  •  Recommendation: Enroll in ENGL 110 English Grammar Review. This course reviews basic grammar: parts of speech, verb forms, basic sentence patterns and structure, modifiers, pronoun choices, usage and mechanics.

I need help improving my sentence structure and variety in my writing assignments.

  • Recommendation: Enroll in ENGL 107 Sentence Pattern Skills. This course reviews basic sentence structures, sentence-combining with coordination, subordination, proper punctuation, and sentence variety and style.

I need help with composing paragraphs.
I would like to improve the organization and development of my paragraphs in my writing.
I would like practice writing in a variety of organizational modes.

  • Recommendation: Enroll in ENGL 108 Composing Skills. This course assists students in the organization and development of paragraphs, focusing on various modes and styles.

I want an individualized class that will help me to learn the strategies for proofreading all of the writing that I do.

  • Recommendation: Enroll in ENGL 109 Proofreading Skills. This course helps students learn the rules of good writing, including punctuation, grammar, tense agreement and usage.

I want to work on my writing style and learn some editing techniques to improve my drafts.

  • Recommendation: Enroll in Revision Skills ENGL 115. This course works n the writer's style, word choice, sentence structure, etc.

I want to take a module that will walk me through the research paper process and then actually help me produce a research assignment.

  • Recommendation: Enroll in Research Skills ENGL 112. This course teaches the process of research and the appropriate documentation style and format for the discipline of the writing assignment.

I know I will be writing papers in my chosen discipline. Is there a Writing Center module that could help me?

  • Recommendation: Enroll in Writing in the Disciplines ENGL 120. This course models the various formats and styles used in a variety of disciplines.

Does the Writing Center have any online courses?

  •  ENGL 108 Composing Skills and ENGL 112 Research Skills are offered online.
