Instructor Educational Qualifications

Assignments should be based upon the following educational criteria applicable for CN instructors:

  • BIOL 122/BIOL 123/BIOL 130: Master’s degree w/at least 18 graduate-level credit hours of content area coursework; Master’s degree in the discipline preferred.
  • CHEM 124/CHEM 125: Master’s degree w/at least 18 graduate-level credit hours of content area coursework; Master’s degree in the discipline preferred.
  • CS 200, CS 205, CS 250, CS 255: Bachelor’s degree w/coursework and/or demonstrated experience in computer science.
  • ECON 132: Bachelor’s degree in business, business education, or economics.
  • ENGL 121, ENGL 122: Master’s degree with graduate hours in writing, in the teaching of writing, or in rhetorical theory; Master's degree in English preferred.
  • FL (all): Master’s degree; Master's degree in foreign language preferred.
  • HIST 140, HIST 141: Master’s degree in history w/at least 18 credit hours of content area coursework.
  • MATH 181, MATH 241, MATH 242: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred w/ at least one degree in Mathematics.
  • PHYS 130: Master’s degree w/at least 18 graduate-level credit hours of content area coursework; Master’s degree in the discipline preferred.
  • POLS 124: Master’s degree w/at least 18 graduate-level credit hours of content area coursework; Master's degree in discipline preferred.
  • PSYC 130: Master’s degree in psychology-based field.

If an assignment is being considered that may not meet the educational criteria above, the building administrator should contact the Community Outreach Office. Exceptions (including any student teacher or long-term substitute assignments) must be approved by the JCCC program area and the Community Outreach Office prior to an assignment to teach a CN class. It is also recommended that instructors being considered for CN assignments have some previous teaching experience. Note: Instructors who have taught CN in the past that do not meet the above educational qualifications may continue to teach the CN subject.
