Whether you speak little to no English or speak English well, JCCC offers English as a Second Language courses at your level.

ESL courses are available for permanent Kansas residents, 16 years of age or older, who are not otherwise enrolled in school.

Instructional fees will be assessed for those holding visas. All students must buy the required textbooks.

If you want to enroll in English classes, you must attend a two-day orientation and testing.

Here is what you must do:

Step 1

  • Sign up in person for the next scheduled two-day orientation and testing.
  • Sign up at the location you want to attend. No phone sign-ups will be accepted.
  • See the schedule for Orientation Sign-up Dates.
  • You will be given an orientation and testing appointment card listing the days and times of your orientation and testing.

Step 2

  • Show up both days of orientation and testing.
  • Bring your appointment card with you.
  • Arrive on time. If you come late you will not be able to participate in the orientation and testing. You will be rescheduled to the next available orientation.

ESL Class Descriptions

ESL, Class 1

This pre-beginning class focuses on basic English structure, vocabulary and conversation for everyday use. Adults from other countries with little or no knowledge of English will find this class helpful. A $75 material fee is due the first class session.

ESL, Class 2

This beginning class focuses on basic English structure, reading, writing, vocabulary, and conversation and life skills for everyday use. A $75 material fee is due the first class session.

ESL, Class 3

This course is targeted to the low intermediate student who has a basic working knowledge of English. Classroom activities will include speaking, reading, writing and vocabulary. Communication for everyday living will be emphasized.  A $75 material fee is due the first class session.

Citizenship Class

This class will help students prepare to become United States citizens. Reading level will be assessed the first class session to determine eligibility in the program. Comprehension of study materials will be necessary to assure success in the program. The class will include U.S. history, government and geography. It will also include the study of American customs and culture. Procedures for applying for U.S. citizenship will be outlined. Call 913-764-1353, ext. 305, for information on the next available class. There is a one-time $50 material fee due the first class session, payable only by check or money order to Johnson County Community College.


If you are under the age of 18

Due to the passage of the Kansas Compulsory School Attendance Law, if you are 16 or 17, you must obtain a compulsory school attendance disclaimer and compulsory attendance exemption form from the public high school in the school district where you currently live. You must bring your compulsory school attendance disclaimer and compulsory attendance exemption form with you when you come to Johnson County Adult Education/ESL classes.

Emancipated Minors:

You will need to bring your court-ordered document with you when you come to Johnson County Adult Education classes or register for the test.

Married 16- and 17-year-olds:

You will need to bring your marriage certificate with you when you come to Johnson County Adult Education classes.
