Photography
The Photography Department provides instruction at an introductory and intermediate level in photographic imaging concepts, technologies, and applications for both self expression/fine art and applied studio photography. We offer instruction in traditional chemical base photo technologies as well as in digital imaging and provide foundational coursework that is transferable to other institutions. A degree in Photography is not offered through JCCC.
“Photography is like an enchanted garden where one is continually meeting the unexpected and wonderful.” - Catherine Weeds Barnes, 1891.
That sentiment remains true today. From the antique dry-plate process to contemporary digital technology, the photographic image reflects a deep-rooted human desire to make pictures. Whether it is to commemorate, communicate or conceptualize, photographs provide us with a starting point in a conversation that expresses our relationship to the world.
Teaching in the department is primarily centered on face-to-face classroom instruction through lecture/discussion, demonstrations, and a studio/lab component and is based upon a two-fold recognition that photography is an imaging technology and that photographs require analysis and judgment.
To meet the interests of students for personal expression an important goal is their development of an appreciation and understanding of the aesthetics of fine art photography specifically and of the other visual arts in general as well as how photography relates to the other arts.
The curriculum provides opportunities for traditional and non-traditional students to acquire new skills and insights for personal growth and cultural enrichment in a stimulating environment as well as preparing students for upper level courses at four year schools.
