Jerry Wolfskill began his career with the Overland Park Police Department in 1972. He was initially assigned to the patrol division until 1974, when he was transferred to the investigations division as a detective. In 1977, he went to work for the Department of Justice as a law enforcement administrator.

In 1980, he was hired by Johnson County Community College as director of the Johnson County Regional Police Academy. Wolfskill has a bachelor's degree in psychology, a master's degree in criminal justice administration from Central Missouri State University and a doctorate in higher education administration and psychology from the University of Kansas.

Officer Mike Miller began his career in law enforcement in 1979 with the Ventura County (California) Sheriff’s Department. In 1984, he received an assignment to field training officer school where he began a long association with training law enforcement officers. In January 1988, he was appointed to a staff officer position at the Ventura County Criminal Justice Training Center. Miller served as a staff officer and senior staff officer for three years.

While assigned to the training academy, he instructed High Risk Vehicle Stops, Building Searches, Drill and Formation, and High Speed/Pursuit Driving. He also coordinated scenario-based training exercises and trained new academy staff officers. Miller attended scenario based training management level courses in San Diego and San Luis Obispo, Calif.. He also attended the California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) and academy staff officer school in San Jose, Calif.

In April 1991, his family moved to Overland Park. He began working for the Overland Park Police Department that same month. In 1992, Miller again answered the call to train new officers by becoming a field training officer, teaching vehicle stops at the Police Academy and helping coordinate scenario-based training exercises. For the next 12 years, he stayed active in the FTO program and as an instructor at the Police Academy.

Miller received an appointment as a staff instructor at the Police Academy. He is honored to represent the Overland Park Police Department and to serve the law enforcement agencies in Johnson County. Miller remains dedicated to safe and professional law enforcement training.

Officer Steven Broers began his law enforcement career in 1992 as a canine officer with the United States Marine Corps. He joined the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in 1998 and has been a member of the training division for the past eight years. He is currently the sheriff's office's range master and a sniper on the sheriff’s emergency response team.

In 2004, Broers attended the Cooper Institute physical fitness instructor program. He has been affiliated with the Police Academy for the past three years where his duties have included physical fitness instruction and assisting with the firearms and Taser programs.

Denis Plumly

Officer Denis Plumly began his career with the Overland Park Police Department in 1972 and was a member of the first class at the Police Academy. He was initially assigned to the patrol division and then transferred to the traffic unit in 1975. He spent the next 20 years with the traffic unit, where he learned accident reconstruction and was the senior police motorcycle instructor.

In 1995, Plumly transferred to the investigations division as a detective. He worked auto theft for about two years and then was re-assigned to the crimes against persons section, working homicide, robbery, sex crimes and child abuse cases. Plumly has been a member of the Kansas City Metro Squad since 1982.

Plumly has been associated with the Police Academy for many years. He started as an adjunct instructor in 1977, teaching Emergency Vehicle Operations. He added the Accident Investigations section in 1982. When the current academy facility opened in 2001, Plumly was selected to be one of five full-time instructors.

Plumly left as a full-time instructor in 2004 following an appointment as an internal affairs investigator but continued as an adjunct instructor. In the fall of 2008, he was again selected to be part of the full-time staff at the Police Academy, where he is proud to serve all the law enforcement agencies in Johnson County.

Officer Tom Schatzle

Officer Tom Schatzle began his police/law enforcement career in January 1984 with the New York City Police Department. Schatzle served in New York City as a uniformed patrol officer, a street narcotics enforcement officer, a plain-clothes undercover operative and as a police applicant investigator.

In 1994, Schatzle retired from the N.Y.P.D. and relocated to Olathe. He continued in his police/law enforcement career by joining the Lenexa Police Department, where he served as a public service officer and as a uniformed police officer until 1998.

Schatzle initiated a training relationship with the Police Academy in 1994 and he has worked in the role of adjunct instructor for defensive tactics since that time. In September 1998, Schatzle accepted a position with the Olathe Police Department. He has served with the O.P.D. since that time as a uniformed patrol officer, a school resource officer (S.R.O.) and as a Kansas City Metropolitan Investigation Squad qualified detective for six years.

In December 2006, Schatzle was placed in a permanent instructor position at the Police Academy as a full-time academy staff instructor. He had served as an adjunct instructor during the previous 13-year period.

Betsy Selman

Elizabeth “Betsy” Selman is a full-time instructor at the Police Academy. She is employed with the Overland Park Police Department and assigned at the Police Academy. Selman has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from CMSU.

She was hired with the Shawnee Police Department in 1995 and was an officer with them until 2000. She worked in patrol, as a field training officer and on the rape evidence collection team. In 2000, the Overland Park Police Department hired Selman. She has worked in patrol, as a field training officer and as an instructor.

In August 2005, Selman was assigned to the Police Academy as a full-time instructor. She teaches Criminal Investigations classes and EVOC, Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.
