PURPOSE
The purpose of Portfolio Review is to provide each student an assessment of his/her current semester’s work by practicing professionals from the region. The review provides each student with an evaluation of his/her potential for success in the field based on the current semester’s performance. Over several semesters the review scores provide evidence of growth and the development of abilities to meet standards necessary to succeed in the field.

PROCEDURES
At the end of each semester, students select three projects from each required studio course they are enrolled in and present those projects in a portfolio. Work produced in elective studio classes is not to be included in the review. However, summer course work that is part of the curriculum may be included in the Fall Portfolio Review. The selected work is placed in one portfolio which will be evaluated by a committee of professionals.

The evaluations are compiled to establish one’s score and ranking. Students receive copies of their evaluation forms, scores and rankings as compared to all participants in their credit hour group. The result will indicate how the student’s work compares to the work of his/her fellow students regarding technical skill and conceptual and formal qualities.

PARTICIPATION
Continuous participation in the Portfolio Review is a program requirement for all GDES majors. Students who do not participate will not be permitted to pre-register for courses for the following semester will jeopardize their approval for enrollment in the Graphic Design Internship course and will not receive faculty job recommendations. Portfolio Review is not intended to eliminate students, but to inform them and to measure their progress over time.

STANDARDS
Based on 100, a score of 50 means that one ranked only “fair” from every evaluation category in the review. This would be considered the minimum satisfactory standard. If your score is below 50, you need to do some serious evaluation of your work performance in the program.

RECOGNITION
Each semester the top-ranked student from each credit hour group is recommended for a Scholarship. The receipt of the award is contingent on the recipient meeting the  guidelines for the scholarship.
