Jesús de Otoro, Honduras - June 13 to July 11, 2009
The Proyecto Arqueologico de Otoro (PADO) was created to incorporate archaeological research, education, and sustainable community development in the Jesús de Otoro valley, Honduras. The valley contains pre-Columbian settlement, rock art sites, and the ruins of colonial period churches. The formal research design takes a problem-oriented approach to understanding the cultural development and transformation of the communities in the valley from the first Paleo-Indian settlers through modern day. In particular, project members work closely with local and national agencies to highlight the importance of Lenca heritage through systematic archaeological and historical investigations.

Summer investigations will take place during June and July in conjunction with the JCCC-International Archaeological Field School. Through the school, students from the U.S. and Honduras will gain hands-on training, and also an opportunity to develop their own research. Students are encouraged to present their research results at professional conferences in the U.S. and Honduras, thus exposing them to the entire arc of scholarly research.
