OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – DuoSolo, the young innovative husband-and-wife team of Mike Kirkendoll, piano, and Mary Kirkendoll, flute, will provide an interactive recital experience at noon Monday, Oct. 19, in the Recital Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, as part of the Ruel Joyce Recital Series, free concerts featuring local classical musicians.
Since forming DuoSolo in 2006, Mary and Michael Kirkendoll have become exciting new forces on the contemporary music scene. DuoSolo has commissioned or premiered more than a dozen works since 2006 by such composers as David Rakowski, Frederic Rzewski, Gabriela Frank and Forrest Pierce. They have been featured in Carnegie Recital Hall, the Esplanade of Singapore, the Lied Center of Kansas series and Trinity Church’s Concerts at One.
DuoSolo creates programs that include music for solo flute, solo piano and flute/piano duo, ranging from 20th-century masterpieces to contemporary explorations of rock, pop, electronic music and performance art. Their blend of creative programming, virtuosic technical abilities and intelligent, engaging dialogue from the stage makes them a favorite of audiences wherever they go.
The Kirkendolls began performing together in 2002 while studying at the Manhattan School of Music. They completed their doctoral degrees at the University of Kansas and continue living in Lawrence.
The Ruel Joyce Recital Series continues at noon Mondays in the Recital Hall, except as noted:
