Principal Symphony cellist to play Ruel Joyce Recital

Cellist Mark Gibbs

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Cellist Mark Gibbs will perform at noon Monday, Nov. 2, in Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, as part of the Ruel Joyce Recital Series, free classical music concerts featuring Kansas City artists.

Gibbs is in his 10th season with the Kansas City Symphony, where he serves as principal cellist. He has appeared as a soloist with the Kansas City Symphony and as a recitalist in Greater Kansas City. Prior to his appointment in Kansas City, Gibbs earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from Northwestern University. His wife is Tamamo Gibbs, principal second violinist with the Kansas City Symphony, who performed a Ruel Joyce Recital earlier in the fall series.

The Ruel Joyce Recital Series continues with Jeff Harshbarger, bass, and guests at noon Monday, Nov. 9, in Yardley Hall.

The series, named for Ruel Joyce, a longtime jazz bassist who headed the local musicians’ federation from 1977 until his death in 1989, is cosponsored by the JCCC music departments, Community Services and the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts. Seating is available first-come, first-served.
