Journalism Faculty
Mark Raduziner, program facilitator and Professor of Journalism and Media Communications, teaches Reporting for the Media, Advanced Reporting and Mass Media and Society, and coordinates the department’s extensive internship program. While serving as adviser to The Campus Ledger, the college’s student newspaper, the publication earned All-American status and three Midwest Pacemaker honors from the Associated Collegiate Press. He has taught at JCCC for more than 25 years. Mark’s professional experience includes radio, television, advertising & marketing, public relations, and reporting for newspapers and magazines. He is an eight-time recipient of the college's Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to teaching, professional development and community work. Greg Harrell, Professor of Journalism and English, has been with JCCC since 1990. Greg teaches Mass Media and Society, Fundamentals of Advertising, and Masterpieces of the Cinema. He has accumulated 40+ years professional experience in the fields of print journalism, advertising and public relations, has served with professional journalism organizations on both state and national levels, and is a former faculty adviser to The Campus Ledger student newspaper. Adjunct FacultyJulie Haas, Adjunct Associate Professor of Journalism, has 30 years of experience in public relations and internal communications. She joined the College Information and Publications office 20 years ago as an editor. In 1990, she became the manager and in 1993 the director. In that capacity, she oversees the college's media relations, advertising, sports information, Web content, publications editing and design, mail list management and photography. As an Adjunct Associate Professor of Journalism, she also teaches online courses in public relations and promotional writing. She won the Lieberman Teaching Excellence Award for Adjunct Faculty in 2003. Joel Nichols, Adjunct Associate Professor of Journalism, has been teaching "Introduction to Broadcasting" and "Broadcast Performance" at JCCC for some 15 years. In addition to classroom lectures, he uses hands-on projects, panels, guest lecturers and field trips to give students a close-up look at the current state of the field as well as real-world suggestions on how to become a successful broadcaster. In addition to teaching at the college, Joel has been working in TV and radio for nearly a quarter of a century. He is the weather anchor on KMBC-TV's FirstNews every weekday morning as well as the weatherman for KCMO Talk Radio 710. Over the years, Joel has also done hundreds of feature stories and hosted children's shows, talk shows and many other special programs. Joel brings this wealth of experience into the classroom in the hope that it will benefit the next generation of broadcast professionals. Joe Petrie, Adjunct Associate Professor of Journalism, teaches Basic and Advanced Video Production. He worked in the motion picture industry for 15 years, with both Sony Pictures and Disney. Joe works in the Media Production and Services department at JCCC and serves as the faculty advisor for the student-produced news magazine. Joe has written and directed a number of video projects for a variety of campus organizations. He earned a bachelor's degree in radio, tv and film from the University of Kansas. Beth Taylor, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Journalism, brings a breadth and depth of nearly 20 years of media experience to her teaching. Beth started cutting her journalism chops locally by writing for The Kansas City Star and St. Joseph (Mo) News-Press. After moving to the East Coast, she landed jobs as a copy editor and then reporter in New York's financial district working for Dow Jones News. Her articles ran in The Wall Street Journal, Barron's and Los Angeles Times, among other publications. When Beth returned to the Midwest as a public relations professional with international PR firm Fleishman-Hillard, she provided communications counsel to local and national clients in the financial and consumer industries. Later, in her career at American Century Investments as a public relations manager, Beth designed media campaigns and served as a spokesperson on a variety of financial and corporate issues. Beth's education includes a bachelor's degree, awarded with honors and distinction, from the University of Kansas School of Journalism, where she also earned her master's degree in Integrated Marketing Communications. Along the way, she's been recognized for her writing, promotions and campaigns with various awards. Gretchen Thum, Adjunct Professor of Journalism, teaches the Principles of Public Relations and Mass Media and Society courses at JCCC. Prior to teaching, her career in corporate public relations and advertising spanned more than 15 years. Gretchen holds bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from the University of Kansas and a master's in psychology from the University of Missouri. She has received numerous awards for her writing and promotional work. Gretchen serves on the Publications Board for The Campus Ledger newspaper and has taught at JCCC since 1994. |
