Journalism Faculty

Mark Raduziner Picture

Mark Raduziner, Department Chair and Professor of Journalism and Media Communications, teaches Mass Media and Society and coordinates the department's extensive internship program. He developed nearly every course offered in the department and works to maintain currency in the department's curriculum as the journalism and media industries continue to evolve. Mark is a former advisor to The Campus Ledger, the college's student newspaper and was involved in the development of JCAV, the student-produced TV news and magazine program. He has taught at JCCC since 1983.

Mark began his professional career as a radio news reporter in Omaha, NE. He has also worked in magazine publishing and has earned awards for his work in advertising and public relations. Sabbatical leaves have provided Mark the opportunity for professional development at both KMBC-TV and KCTV-5 as well as Entercom Broadcasting and The Kansas City Star. He is a recipient of the college's Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to teaching, professional development and community work. He has also earned the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching Excellence.

Greg Harrell Picture

Greg Harrell, Professor of Journalism and English, has been with JCCC since 1990. Greg teaches Mass Media and Society, Fundamentals of Advertising, and Masterpieces of the Cinema. He has accumulated 40+ years professional experience in the fields of print journalism, advertising and public relations, has served with professional journalism organizations on both state and national levels, and is a former faculty adviser to The Campus Ledger student newspaper.

Greg takes special interest in helping students discover and develop their journalistic abilities, and invites questions or comments.

Adjunct Faculty

Corbin H. Crable, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Journalism, has taught at the college since August 2009. He teaches (1) Reporting for the Media, (2) Advanced Reporting and (3) Mass Media and Society. He holds a B.A. in English and Literature and an M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communications--both from Kansas State University.

Corbin has worked as a copy editor for Lenexa, KS-based Vance Publishing as well as The Grand Island Independent, a medium-sized daily newspaper in Central Nebraska. In addition to working for the college, Corbin serves as co-editor of The Gardner News--a twice-weekly newspaper in southern Johnson County. Corbin is especially interested in the changing role of copy editors in newsrooms, as well as the emergence of international media organizations, such as al-Jazeera, and the way in which American media consumers respond to them.

Julie Haas, Adjunct Professor of Journalism, has 30 years of experience in public relations and internal communications. She joined the College Information and Publications office 20 years ago as an editor. In 1990, she became the manager and in 1993 the director. In that capacity, she oversees the college's media relations, advertising, sports information, Web content, publications editing and design, mail list management and photography. As an Adjunct Associate Professor of Journalism, she also teaches online courses in public relations and promotional writing. She won the Lieberman Teaching Excellence Award for Adjunct Faculty in 2003.

Joel Nichols, Adjunct Professor of Journalism, has been teaching "Introduction to Broadcasting" and "Broadcast Performance" at JCCC for some 15 years. In addition to classroom lectures, he uses hands-on projects, panels, guest lecturers and field trips to give students a close-up look at the current state of the field as well as real-world suggestions on how to become a successful broadcaster.

In addition to teaching at the college, Joel has been working in TV and radio for nearly a quarter of a century. He is the weather anchor on KMBC-TV's FirstNews every weekday morning as well as the weatherman for KCMO Talk Radio 710. Over the years, Joel has also done hundreds of feature stories and hosted children's shows, talk shows and many other special programs. Joel brings this wealth of experience into the classroom in the hope that it will benefit the next generation of broadcast professionals.

Joe Petrie, Adjunct Associate Professor of Journalism, teaches Basic and Advanced Video Production. He worked in the motion picture industry for 15 years, with both Sony Pictures and Disney. Joe works in the Media Production and Services department at JCCC and serves as the faculty advisor for the student-produced news magazine. Joe has written and directed a number of video projects for a variety of campus organizations. He earned a bachelor's degree in radio, tv and film from the University of Kansas.

Mary Schulte, Adjunct Associate Professor of Journalism, teaches Digital Photojournalism. She is currently the Features Photo Editor at The Kansas City Star, where she has worked for 22 years, including eight as photojournalist. Prior to joining The Star, Mary worked as a photojournalist at The Greenville News-Piedmont in Greenville, S.C. and interned at the Charlotte Observer in Charlotte, N.C.

Mary earned a B.A. in Education from Missouri State University and a master's degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Gretchen Thum, Adjunct Professor of Journalism, teaches the Principles of Public Relations and Mass Media and Society courses at JCCC. Prior to teaching, her career in corporate public relations and advertising spanned more than 15 years. Gretchen holds bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from the University of Kansas and a master's in psychology from the University of Missouri. She has received numerous awards for her writing and promotional work. Gretchen serves on the Publications Board for The Campus Ledger newspaper and has taught at JCCC since 1994.
