Sun Rises on Japan Festival

    OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Heart of America Japan-America Society and Japan Festival Committee present the ninth annual Greater Kansas City Japan Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, in the Carlsen Center. Two new attractions for this year are Mu Daiko, a well-known taiko drum ensemble, and opera singer Yukiko Iwasaki from Japan.

    Festival events on Oct. 7 again include hands-on workshops on calligraphy, tea ceremony, ikebana (flower arranging), bonsai, buyo dance, taiko drumming, oragami and Japanese martial arts; kimono and hina doll exhibit; fourth annual amateur talent show; activities for children – candy art, juggling games and face painting; and music and dance performances. Food items are Japanese noodles, delicacies from Japanese restaurants and items from JCCC’s new sushi bar.

    Recital performances on Oct. 8 will be Japanese music, taiko drumming , storytelling and buyo dance in full makeup and costume.
JCCC has hosted the Greater Kansas City Japan Festival since 2004.
