JCCC trustees approve guidelines for creating 2007-2008 budget

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — At their monthly meeting Nov. 16, the Johnson County Community College board of trustees approved the guidelines the college will use to build JCCC’s budget for 2007-2008.

The guidelines do not call for an increase in the mill levy for the college for 2007-2008. In August 2006, the board of trustees agreed to reduce the mill levy assessed taxpayers to support Johnson County Community College. The mill levy for the college will remain at 8.872 mills, the lowest the college’s mill levy has been since 2002.

Nor will students see an increase in tuition in 2007-2008. Johnson County residents will continue to pay $63 a credit hour. Kansas residents outside the county will pay $78 a credit hour, and non-residents will pay $144 a credit hour.

The college’s budget will be prepared under the assumption that the county’s assessed valuation will increase by 2.5 percent and state aid will increase by 2.64 percent.

The guidelines again call for those creating the budget to identify where reductions in expenditures may be made. Operating budgets will be limited to a 2 percent increase except for items over which the college has little control, such as utilities and postage.

College faculty, students and administrators will begin their formal budget planning process this month. The trustees will review the budget in April and approve the management budget in May. The college’s legal budget is approved in August.

The next regular meeting of the JCCC board of trustees is 5 p.m. Dec. 7 in the Hugh Speer Board room, 137 GEB.  All board of trustees meetings are open to the public.
