OVERLAND PARK, Ks. – YeonSun Joo, cellist, and Ya-Ting Liou, pianist, will perform at noon Monday, Oct. 6, in the Recital Hall of Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College.  The free concert is part of the fall 2008 Ruel Joyce Recital Series, featuring classical musicians from Kansas City.

Korean born Joo hails from a musical family, including her mother, a pianist, and two sisters, both violinists. Joo currently serves as associate principal cellist of the Kansas City Symphony, a post she has held since 2005. She has enjoyed a remarkable career on the international stage as a concert soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician.

As a soloist, Joo performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Korean National Broadcasting System Orchestra, World Symphony, Seoul Philharmonic and has been featured on live radio and television broadcasts. 

As a recitalist, Joo has performed in the Seoul Kumho Recital Hall, Sydney Opera House, Lincoln Center and Weill Hall of Carnegie Hall. In demand as a chamber musician, she collaborated with noted international artists Robert Diaz, Elmar Oliveira, Itzhak Perlman and Lorin Maazel.

After graduating from the Seoul Arts High School under Myung-Wha Chung, Joo went on to earn her bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music under Orlando Cole, then a master’s degree under Lynn Harrell at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.   

Taiwanese pianist Ya-Ting Liou currently serves as piano faculty at the Community Music and Dance Academy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Liou, along with pianist and husband Blas Gonzalez, have performed their Pangea Piano Project across the globe to New Zealand, Taiwan and Argentina.
Performance highlights in Liou’s career include appearances at the Kennedy Center, State of the Art at the State Department in Washington, D.C., Yamaha Hall in New York and Kaoshiung Cultural Center and Taipei National Concert Hall, Taiwan.

The Ruel Joyce Recital Series continues at noon Mondays in the Recital Hall.

The series, named for Ruel Joyce, a longtime jazz bassist who headed the local musicians’ federation from 1977 until his death in 1989, is cosponsored by the JCCC music departments, Community Services and the Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts. Seating is limited and available first-come, first-served.
