The Spencers combine healing and magic

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Kevin and Cindy Spencer, the 2009 Magicians of the Year, will be at Johnson County Community College presenting two seminars for health care professionals — Healing of Magic for physical and occupational therapists on Oct. 6 and Hocus Focus for RNs, LPNs, social workers, counselors and psychologists and education professionals working with children or adults who have behavioral or learning disabilities on Oct. 8.

  • Healing of Magic will be from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the Capitol Federal Conference Center of the Regnier Center. The Spencers use the rehabilitative therapy of magic to work with people who have experienced strokes, spinal cord or head injuries, or learning or developmental disabilities. The most important aspect of this therapy is the ability of the patient to transfer the skills learned by performing magic tricks into activities of daily living. In this workshop, the therapist will learn valuable new tools to motivate clients to become more involved in their rehabilitation treatment. CEUs are available for physical and occupational therapists. Cost is $72.
  • Hocus Focus will be from 8:30-3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Capitol Federal Conference Center of the Regnier Center. This seminar is for health care and education professionals working with children or adults who may have behavioral or learning disabilities and uses simple magic tricks. It is a systematic approach by which students learn to focus and accomplish specific goals and objectives by learning magic tricks – simple to complex  – and then exploring the benefits of each one. CEUs are available for RNs, LPNs, ACHAs, social workers, counselors and psychologists. Cost is $72.
