Japan Festival
Denver Taiko Band

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Japanese culture comes alive at the 12th annual Greater Kansas City Japan Festival from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College, presented by the Heart of America Japan-America Society and Japan Festival committee.

Tickets cost $7 for adults, $4 for students and children and free for those younger than 5.

This year’s festival keeps annual favorites — classical Japanese performances of Denver Taiko, koto, shamisen and buyo dancers; a formal opening ceremony with the ritual breaking of the sake barrel and toast; exhibits of kimonos, hina dolls, ikebana (flower arranging) and bonsai; children’s activities like origami, portraits in kimono or samurai armor and a Japanese bank and store using yen; Japanese candy artist; and calligraphy, Japanese conversation, tea ceremony and kimono workshops.

New additions include a wedding kimono display, a Japanese cultural village for children, a diorama display of famous Japanese sites, and more anime and manga.

A larger selection of food and beverages will be offered than ever before. Festival-goers can sample traditional Japanese food served by JCCC Dining Services and local restaurants — One Bite Japanese Grill, Nara, Siki and Jo’s from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. in the Capitol Federal Conference Room of the Regnier Center, with Japanese beer and sake tasting available. Food will also be served across campus at the JCCC cafeteria, Café Tempo and Encore Espresso. Shoppers will find a bazaar with crafts, kimonos, happi coats, books, sweets and more on the second floor of the Carlsen Center.

JCCC has hosted the Greater Kansas City Japan Festival since 2004.
