JCCC shows off its flower power

Floral arrangement

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — First flour, now flowers. Johnson County Community College students are adding to the mouth-watering tradition of a Friday pastry shop with flower sales. Both the JCCC bakery shop and floriculture club sales begin at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug 28, in room 145 of the Office and Classroom Building. Shops remain open until sold out or 6 p.m. on Friday throughout the semester.

Floriculture students will offer unique floral designs, contemporary and traditional, beginning with a variety of fresh seasonal flowers. Arrangements will vary from week to week showcasing, for example, traditional round, Victorian, vegetative and oriental arrangements. Cost of arrangements, with containers, range from $15-$25.

Floriculture sales will allow students to experience a real audience for their designs and understand the business of a flower shop, according to Diana Ryan, adjunct professor, floriculture. Students who earn a floriculture certificate generally plan to work in a flower shop or own their own business.

In turn, Ryan says the public will see different aspects of floral design each week.

“The public will come to understand there is a lot more to floral design than a simple centerpiece,” Ryan said.

Arrangements for a special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries can be pre-ordered no later than the Wednesday before the following Friday by e-mailing Ryan at dgryan@jccc.edu.

Ryan says the bakery and flower sales are a perfect fit.

“Flowers are food for the soul,” Ryan said. “Like pastries, flowers are temporary, and enjoying them, even for a short while, makes you feel good.”

For more information about the floriculture club sales, call  Ryan at 913-469-8500, ext. 5483.

The bakery shop will continue its reputation for cakes, tortes, chocolate candies, tarts, eclairs, mousse, cookies and pies freshly made by students in JCCC’s pastry/baking certificate program. For a product list as well as any special or pre-orders, contact Chef Doug Fllick at dflick@jccc.edu.
