JCCC to offer green building education

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. --  The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System made available its first LEED Green Associate test on April 27, 2009, to ensure the implementation of practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions. In the first 100 days, 1,000 people earned a LEED Green Associate certificate as part of the U.S. Green Building Council efforts to create green jobs for a green economy.

Starting this fall, the Center for Business and Technology at Johnson County Community College is offering both the LEED Introductory class and LEED Green Associate Test Prep class.

The LEED Green Associate Test Prep class will be offered 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in room 250 of the Regnier Center. The session is designed for professionals who have prior construction industry experience and have earned an academic qualification in a related construction field.  This course prepares professionals  to take the examination for LEED Green Associate accreditation, the first  of six accreditations now offered by the Green Building Certification Institute.

The LEED Introductory Course will be offered 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11, in room 101A of the Regnier Center. This information session is geared towards all industries — construction, school teachers, engineers, homeowners, realtors, developers, government officials, banker and anyone who will be affected by green building designs. Topics in this session include a broad overview of LEED and how it affects various industries.

While the Green Building Certification Institute manages LEED credentialing, it  relies on educational institutions to provide education programs and exam preparation. JCCC will offer additional LEED courses in spring 2010.

All Center for Business LEED classes are approved as  Kansas Department of Commerce workforce training programs.
