OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Clifton Truman Daniel, the oldest grandson of former U.S. President Harry S. Truman, and Michael J. Devine, director or the Harry S. Truman Presidential Museum and president of the Truman Library Institute for National and International Affairs, will speak in honor of Truman’s 125th birthday as part of the Polsky Practical Personal Enrichment Series from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College.
The seminar is free, but seating is limited. Reserve tickets by calling the JCCC box office, 913-469-4445. Reserved covered parking is available. Refreshments and networking are offered one-half hour before and after the program.
Devine will review exhibits and events available at the Truman Library, Independence, Mo., commemorating Truman’s 125th birthday. Next a film will be shown that traces Truman’s life from his birth on a farm in Lamar, Mo., through his landmark presidency. Narrated by Truman biographer David McCullough, the film examines Truman’s lengthy courtship of his wife Bess Wallace, World War I military service, entry into local politics under “Boss” Tom Pendergast, election to the U.S. senate and rise to the presidency.
Daniel will give insight into Truman’s private life. Growing up around the former president, Daniel was privy to family stories illustrating Truman’s character.
Daniel is the son of late E. Clifton Daniel Jr., former managing editor of the New York Times, and best-selling mystery writer Margaret Truman. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he majored in journalism.
He is currently the director of public relations for Truman College, one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago. Prior to that, he worked as a feature writer and editor for the Morning Star and Sunday Star-News, Wilmington, N.C.
Daniel is the honorary chair of the board of trustees of the Harry S. Truman Library Institute, a frequent speaker and fundraiser, and the author of Growing Up with My Grandfather: Memories of Harry S. Truman.
The Polsky Series is underwritten by the Norman & Elaine Polsky Family Supporting Foundation within the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in partnership with JCCC and includes topics not now being offered elsewhere.
Commemorating Truman’s 125th birthday, 3,000 copies of the 30-year-old book, Harry S. Truman — The Man Who Walked with Giants, written and illustrated by David Melton, have been re-published. The book, which originally sold for $30, will be available for $10 on Nov. 11.
