JCCC hosts December concerts
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Johnson County Community College will host five free concerts in December — three by academic groups, one by the University of Kansas and one by the Johnson County Chorus. All concerts are free and open to the public.
- Wednesday, Dec. 2 — The JCCC Chamber Choir and MadRegalia, directed by Terri Teal, JCCC professor, vocal music, will perform at 7: 30 p.m. in Polsky Theatre. For more information about the Dec. 2 concert, contact Teal at 913-469-8500, ext. 3176, or tteal@jccc.edu.
- Friday, Dec. 4 —KU Vespers will be at 7:30 p.m. in Yardley Hall. Featuring special guest conductor Simon Carrington, along with the KU choirs and KU Symphony, the performance includes Quelle est cette odeur agréable by Eric Delson, And the Glory from Handel’s Messiah; The Snow by Elgar; and pieces for Hanukkah and Kwanza. The concert is free but RSVPs are required at the JCCC box office, 913-469-4450. This is the 85th anniversary of the KU Vespers, and its first year “on the road.”
- Tuesday, Dec. 8 — The JCCC Concert Band, directed by Ron Stinson, JCCC professor, instrumental music, performs at 7:30 p.m. in Polsky Theatre. The program is Lyric Music by Robert Starer; The Voice Beneath the Waters, Barry Kopetz; Mosaic, Stephen Paulas; Clash, Ryan Main; and The Iliad, Robert Smith. - Wednesday, Dec. 9 — JCCC Jazz Night features the JCCC Jazz Combo, Midnight Blues Jazz Choir and the Midnight Express Jazz Ensemble, directed by Stinson, at 7:30 p.m. in Polsky Theatre. Works include Love Is the Tender Trap, Down St. Thomas Way, Goin’ On, Invitation, Sweet Georgia Brown and more.
- Sunday, Dec. 13 — The Johnson County Chorus, directed by Anita Cyrier, performs its annual holiday concert, Winter Solstice, at 3 p.m. in Yardley Hall. This concert marks the Johnson County Chorus’ 30th anniversary. The program includes secular and religious music appropriate to winter and the holidays performed by the combined chorus and the select group, the Choraliers, and a Kansas City premiere of Shepherd Song, composed and directed by Eugene Butler, former Johnson County Chorus director and vocal music instructor at JCCC. In the concluding Peace, Peace, former members of the chorus are invited to come on stage and audience members are invited to join the chorus during the third verse singing Silent Night.
