Bill Self to speak at JCCC
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Bill Self, coach of the men's basketball team at the University of Kansas, will present Activity and Exercise, What Improves the Heart of a Champion, from 8:30-9:20 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, in Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College. The event is free and open to the public.
Self's presentation is made possible by a gift to the JCCC Foundation by the estate of Nell Mitchell, an Overland Park resident and physical education instructor at Paseo High School, to be used for physical education scholarships and promoting wellness in the community.
As one of the most impressive coaches in the college game today, Self has been at the helm of the KU men's basketball program for six years and led his team to win the NCAA National Championship in 2008. In 2009 the Jayhawks finished 27-8 and reached the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and 26th time overall, while winning the Big 12 title for the fifth straight season with a 14-2 conference mark. Self has a 169-40 record in six seasons at Kansas and is 376-145 in 16 seasons as a head coach.
Basketball has awarded Self the opportunity to meet and interact with thousands of young people throughout the country. His desire to improve the lives of youth in the community, led Self and his wife, Cindy, to create the Assists Foundation, a nonprofit organization to help provide young people access to better lives.
Additionally, Self serves as a member of the USA Basketball Competition Committee and board member for the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Self played collegiate basketball at Oklahoma State University, where he was a four-year letter winner. He received his bachelor's degree in business and a master's degree in athletic administration, both from Oklahoma State University.
