JCCC Hosts 25th Annual Parkinson’s Symposium

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The 25th Annual Parkinson’s Symposium will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 28, in Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center, Johnson County Community College.

  • Dr. Jules Nazzaro, MD, associate professor, neurosurgery,  University of Kansas Medical Center, will give an overview of current treatments and surgeries for Parkinson’s disease.
  • Kathrynne Holden, MS, RD, a nationally recognized expert, will speak on optimal nutritional strategies for people with Parkinson’s disease.
  • Janet Hamburg, executive producer of the DVD, Motivating Moves for People with Parkinson’s Disease, for the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, New York City, will discuss the importance of movement for people with Parkinson’s disease. Her DVD provides a seated exercise program with music by Juilliard composer and pianist Robert Abramson.

The symposium is sponsored by JCCC’s Health and Human Services and the Parkinson Foundation of the Heartland. RNs, LPNs, LMHTs, social workers, counselors and dieticians will earn 3 contact hours, ACHAs will earn 3 (RC) hours. Approval is pending for PTs and OTs.
