JCCC paralegal program to host open house
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The Johnson County Community College paralegal program will have an open house for its new electronic classroom from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 8, in room 379 of the General Education Building. The open house is free and open to the public.
Starting in the 2009 spring semester, JCCC’s paralegal training program opened a dedicated classroom with 22 computers boasting high-speed Internet connections, wide-screen monitors and the latest law office software.
Now students in the program have instant access to a complete body of state and federal statutes and cases through WestLaw and LexisNexis from their classroom desks. In addition, students gain hands-on experience with the most popular law office programs including Summation iBlaze, CaseMap and TimeMap.
Paralegal classes are scheduled 4-9:45 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Currently six classes are held in the electronic classroom — Legal Research and Writing I; Legal Research and Writing II; Computer-Assisted Legal Research; Civil Litigation; Law Office Computing and Employment Law.
“Some attorneys are not that computer literate, especially in regards to the new legal software, so they really depend on paralegals for assistance,” said Anita Tebbe, professor and chair, legal studies. “Anymore, you can’t really be a paralegal without this kind of training.”
JCCC offers both a paralegal associate degree and certificate. The program has been approved by the American Bar Association since 1980. For more information about the paralegal program, call Tebbe at 913-469-3184 or atebbe@jccc.edu.
