Holocaust remembrance at JCCC
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. ¬– The Johnson County Community College Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Campus Activities Board are sponsoring events in remembrance of the Holocaust. All events are free and open to the public.
- Canceled: Peter Loth, a Holocaust survivor, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, in the M.R. and Evelyn Hudson Auditorium of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, JCCC. A reception at 6 p.m. in the Atrium precedes the presentation. Loth’s story is recorded by his stepdaughter, author Sandra Kellog Rath, in the book Peace by Piece. Having grown up in post-World War II Poland, Loth knew very little about his past. With the help of the American Red Cross, he discovered that he had been born in Stutthof Concentration Camp. Loth is an international speaker who carries a message of forgiveness.
- Sally Gordon, JCCC administrative assistant, will lead a discussion of Night from 2-3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in room 264 of the General Education Building. Night, written by Elie Wiesel, Nobel Peace Prize winner, is based on his experience as a young Orthodox Jew of being sent with his family to the German concentration camps at Auschwitz and Buchenwald during World War II. Night is an Oprah’s book club selection.
- Inge Auerbacher will present The Holocaust Through the Eyes of a Survivor from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in the Craig Auditorium of the General Education Building. Auerbacher was born in Germany and spent three years between ages 7-10 in the Terezin (Theresienstadt) concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, where out of 15,000 children, about 1 percent survived. Auerbacher is the author of Beyond the Yellow Star to America, I Am a Star and most recently, Finding Dr. Schatz: The Discovery of Streptomycin and a Life Saved.
For more information about Auerbacher, sponsored by CAB, call the Student Activities Desk, 913-469-3807. For more information about Loth and Gordon’s events, sponsored by ODEI, contact Susan McGarvey, administrative assistant, ODEI, 913-469-8500, ext. 4327, or mcgarvey@jccc.edu
