JCCC hosts five free May concerts

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Johnson County Community College will host five May concerts —one by adult and children’s community choruses, three by academic music groups and one sponsored by the JCCC Brown & Gold Club. All events are free and open to the public. No reservations are required.

  • Sunday, May 3 — the Johnson County Chorus, directed by Anita Cyrier, and Young Singers of Overland Park, directed by Jan Jensen, will perform its spring show and concert, Life Is Good, at 4 p.m. in Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center.

The choruses will sing separately and together. The program features a medley of songs about love and happiness, plus others. Titles include Why We Sing, Homeland, Love Changes Everything, Fly Me to the Moon, Life Is Happiness Indeed and When the Saints Go Marching In.

  • Tuesday, May 5 — JCCC jazz night, featuring the Midnight Blues Jazz Choir and Midnight Express Jazz Ensemble, directed by instrumental music professor Ron Stinson, will be at 7:30 p.m. in Polsky Theatre of the Carlsen Center.

This concert will highlight jazz standards as well as original compositions. Clint Ashlock, adjunct associate professor of music, has written an original composition for the Midnight Express titled Hey Ron. This composition will feature each section of the band as well as individual soloists. Ashlock has also done an arrangement of the Benny Golson tune, Killer Joe, for the Midnight Blues Jazz Choir. Guest bass player Brian Padavic has written an original composition for the Midnight Express and arrangements for the Midnight Blues.

  • Wednesday, May 6 — the JCCC Concert Band, also directed by Stinson, performs at 7:30 p.m. in Polsky Theatre.The Concert Band will celebrate spring with three compositions: Dancing at Stonehenge, a multicultural composition that depicts the famous Stonehenge rock formation in England; Anthony Iannaccone’s two-movement work titled After a Gentle Rain; and Alfred Reed’s The Hounds of Spring, one of the major compositions for wind bands ever written.

  • Thursday, May 7 — JCCC’s Chamber Choir and MadRegalia, directed by Terri Teal, associate professor, vocal music, will be at 7:30 p.m. in Polsky Theatre.

The repertoire includes nature songs, African pieces, madrigals, Gloria by Paul Basler, Mendelssohn selections (his 200th anniversary year), and Frank Ticheli's Earthsong. For more information about the May 7 concert, contact Teal at 913-469-8500, ext. 3176, or tteal@jccc.edu.

  • Friday, May 22 — JCCC's Brown & Gold Club, for Johnson County residents age 55 and older, presents The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra at 8 p.m. Friday, May 22, in Yardley Hall. Refreshments begin at 7 p.m. in the Carlsen Center lobby. This 17-piece swing band will play favorites from the 1940s-1960s. All ages are welcome to attend.
