Cavaliers one of 14 ranked teams in championship field

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. ­ The Johnson County Community College volleyball team (25-7) will attempt to get to the national title match for the fourth time in five years when play begins Thursday, at the Dells Center at the Wisconsin Dells Resort, site of the NJCAA Division II Tournament. JCCC won the title in 2005, and lost to Kishwaukee in 2007 and 2008.

The road to the championship is always a tough trip, but with the stacked field in this year's tournament, it might be one of the toughest. Thirteen of the 16 teams are ranked in the NJCAA top 20, including the Cavaliers at No. 5, and one team received votes. The ranked teams include Parkland College (No. 1 ­ 38-5), Cowley College (No. 2 ­ 28-4), Illinois Central College (No. 3 ­ 29-7), Kishwaukee College (No. 4 ­ 38-4), Columbus State Community College (No. 6 ­ 41-8), Kalamazoo Valley Community College (No. 8 ­ 36-6), Des Moines Area Community College (No. 9 ­ 41-8), Hagerstown Community College (No. 10 ­ 31-7), Glendale Community College (No. 11 ­ 18-13), McHenry County College (No. 13 ­ 25-8), North Platte Community College (No. 18 ­ 27-14) and East Central College (No. 20 ­ 24-13). Monroe College (27-2) received votes.

The two non-ranked teams in the field are Catawamba Valley Community College (23-4) and JCCC's first round opponent Iowa Lakes Community College (24-20). JCCC and Iowa Lakes are scheduled to play on court one at 3 p.m., Thursday afternoon, Nov. 19. The Lady Cavaliers defeated Iowa Lakes in three straight games earlier this season, and lead the all-time series 7-2.

A first round victory would set up a possible rematch with Kishwaukee, who opens against North Platte.
