JCCC wins women's Region VI Soccer Title

2009 JCCC Women's Soccer Team

OVERLAND PARK, KS The Johnson County Community College women's soccer team continued its dominance in the NJCAA Region VI Tournament, winning its seventh title in the 11 year history of the championship. This year, JCCC knocked off 10 ranked and previously unbeaten Hutchinson Community College, 1-0 in the semifinals, then followed with a thrilling 1-0 double overtime win over Barton County Community College in the championship match. It was the second straight year JCCC knocked off Barton County to win the title.

JCCC will now host the NJCAA District B Championship this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6-7.

In the championship match, both teams held each other in check until JCCC freshman Emily McKinney found the back of the net in the 108th minute.

Sophomore Megan Weston provided the game-winning assist. Those two also provided the scoring in the win over Hutchinson only Weston fired the game winner off a feed from McKinney.

The MVP of the championship might have been sophomore Kelly Voigts and the defense in front of her. Voigts did not allow a goal in the three games of the tournament. Her first shutout, a 4-0 win over Neosho County, tied the school record for individual shutouts in a season. She set the record against Hutchinson, then upped her record to 15 shutouts with the victory over Barton. Voigts recorded a total of eight saves in the semifinal and final matches.

"We really limited our mistakes in the back," said JCCC head coach Jim Schwab. łThe entire team played well defensively. They all covered for each other and we bonded together at the right time."
