JCCC on all cylinders in season opener
O
VERLAND PARK, KS -- The Johnson County Community College women’s soccer team has begun the 2007 season right where it left off the 2006 campaign -- scoring goals at a record pace. JCCC opened the season Saturday, August 25, at Cloud County, and came away with 18-0 victory. That was just one goal shy of the record 19-0 victory over Cloud County in the first round of the Region VI Championship last October.

Rachel Luster, an NJCAA and NSCAA All-American and the nation’s scoring leader a year ago, began the barrage at the 7:15 mark. She finished with three goals and one assist in the match, bringing her career point total to 108, No. 2 all-time at JCCC. She needs just five more points to become the program all-time leader.
Emily Leeper, a NSCAA All-American last year, provided the assist, her first of four in the game. Leeper made it 2-0 one minute later, netting her first of four goals as well. She finished with 12 total points in the game. Leeper now has 91 career points, and with nine more points will become just the sixth player in team history to top 100 points in a career.
Sophomore Courtney Cowan matched Leeper, netting four goals of her own. Cowan, who also had a four-goal effort against Cloud Count last year, scored JCCCs sixth, ninth, 12th and 15th goals of the match.
Several freshman had big games in their collegiate debuts. Sarah Brummett of Shawnee Mission South had two goals and four assists. Jessica Wishon of Lee’s Summit had a goal and three assists, and Abbey Vestal of Lawrence, Kan., had two goals.
