Shelley announced tri-captains for 2009 season

OVERLAND PARK, KS -- Johnson County Community College head baseball coach Kent Shelley announced today the three players who will serve as tri-captains of the 2009 season. Sophomore outfielder John Lennher, sophomore pitcher Ryan Garman and freshman catcher Sam Stucky have been selected by their teammates and coaches to serve as captains.

Lenherr, a five tool player from Windom, Kan., will be counted on as one of the go to guys in the Cavalier line-up. Lenherr has tremendous speed, a cannon from the outfield, hits for average and power, covers a lot of ground in the outfield, and will be one of the top players in the state of Kansas. As a freshman, Lenherr hit .421 (82-for-195) with 15 doubles, 2 triples, and 44 runs batted in. His 15 doubles and .421 batting average was second on the team and his 44 runs batted in was third.

“John was second team all-conference last year, and we expect him to be one of the top players in Kansas this season,” said Shelley. “He will be counted on to lead a young team and I think he is the right man to do that. He turned down a lot of division one offers early this year and there is no telling where he might end up after another outstanding season in a Cavalier uniform.”

Garman, a talented right-hander from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, finished his freshman campaign with a 4-3 record, with 23 strikeouts in 38 2/3 innings on the hill. He also posted an earned run average of a 5.25. Garman made 13 appearances, 11 as a starter, and only had 15 walks.

“Ryan is a hard worker and a natural leader,” said Shelley. “He was a captain last year and that really says something about somebody’s character when they get voted again. He is a bulldog on the mound and is somebody who is going to give you a chance to win every time he is on the mound.”

Stucky, a catcher from McPherson, Kan., has a chance to be one of the best catchers to ever wear a Cavalier uniform. He is one of the most athletic players on the team and he is a fun player to watch. Sam led the team in several offensive categories this fall including batting average, RBI’s, and stolen bases. He will be counted on in the middle of the order and should drive in several runs for the Cavaliers.

”Sam is a machine and does everything very well,” Shelley said. “Its not every season your catcher has a chance to lead your team in stolen bases and Sam might do just that. For a freshman he is playing way above his years and should be one of the top catchers in Kansas this season. It is going to be fun to watch him develop and see the attention he draws this spring.”
